Era of fake news

“Don’t believe in everything you read on the internet just because there is a picture, audio or video”
Fake news is charged today. The term fake news has seen close attention and criticism in recent years. The term itself is problematic in on growing digital world because-
1 Fake news can be difficult to distinguish because it often twists half truths
2 More the fake news in public domain limits the people’s ability to make informed decision.Especially in regard to the politicians for whom they vote.
3 Web of fake news also limits the possibility of productive political dialogue
4 Dissemination of fake news degrades social fabric of society.

Role of social media in fake news

The biggest factor behind the success of fake news is high level of social engagement. Social networks connect us with other minded people who share their values and beliefs. These values may be social , political or economic. On social media platform their is button/icon called “share” is the most problematic and dangerous button/icon in the digital world. Many a times people don’t even able to anticipate that they becomes the part of fake news propaganda. In today’s world who can afford smartphones can influence many things, upto people’s life and death. Last year thirty people were killed just because of one whatsapp message about alleged child lifters. Recently in phulwama episode Pakistan initiated fake news propaganda on social media regarding number of IAF pilot they arrested, number of IAF fighter jet they shot down. Fake news, that the Kashmir based people are targeted in different part of country was also triggered. This shows social media is backbone of fake news propagandas.

Impact of fake news in politics

Back in 2013, The world economic forum warned that so called ‘fake news’ would be one of the biggest threat faced by society. Most common fake stories we hear revolve around politics, but we can’t undermine the impact of fake news on society in general. One of the main concern of fake news is that they  can polarise society. In addition, growing polarisation of society on ideological lines has made the job of spreading fake news easier. Particularly during political events. In 2017 election in Jakarta, more than 1000 reports about politics and the election were confirmed as hoaxes. One particular fake news campaign against the main opposition candidate. Fake narrative was “if Mr.anies baswedan loses the election, there will be a Muslim revolution “
This fake narrative becomes boon for Mr. anies baswedan now he is the governor of jakarta

Impact of fake news on diplomacy

Fake news stories can not polarise different groups within in a nation but also affect international relations. In may 2017 Qatar’s state news agency claimed that its twitter account has been compromised, hackers had published fake comments allegedly made by the emir criticising aspects of US and Arab gulf foreign policy towards iran. Although news agency was quick enough to label the comments as false, but did not prevent neighbouring countries like Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt have severing diplomatic ties with the county.
On societal perspective fake scandals often seems more believable than the truth and have leads to racism, harassment and damage to reputation.
In this digital era without thinking that the government should take some initiative to counter fake news we should make all sections of the population aware of the realities of this information war and evolve a consensus to fight this war. It must also take strict action.
